PREPARE BEFORE THE WEATHER DECIDES FOR YOU

Use the latest Met Office warning and local conditions to make home and travel decisions before severe weather narrows your options.

Before severe weather

  1. Check the latest Met Office forecast and warning details for your area and any planned route.
  2. Charge phones and power banks and make sure torches, warm layers and essential medicines are accessible.
  3. Review travel, childcare and work alternatives rather than waiting until conditions deteriorate.
  4. Secure loose outdoor items if high winds are forecast and know who you may need to check on.

Before travelling

Read the actual warning, including expected impacts and likelihood, rather than relying on the colour alone. Decide whether the journey is necessary using current warnings and local conditions.

At home

Know how you will manage light, communications, warmth and essential power needs if weather causes a wider outage.

Warnings are impact based.
The Met Office advises reading the details of each warning. Current emergency-service and local-authority advice takes priority during severe weather.
